As an attempt to return the Image comics to canon and fill in the gaps between it and volume 4, Andrew Modeen enlisted the talents of several Mirage and Image TMNT writers and artists, as well as some fans, to release two self-published, unlicensed issues. Although completely fan-made, they were developed using notes from Gary Carlson (writer of the Image series) and Ross May (who developed a prominent character in these issues).
